Cluster, disseminate and valorise experience and results obtained in the fields of (industrial) data communication, embedded control, and high-end practical and/or distance learning engineering education. This experience has been obtained in the i-MOCCA (www.imocca.eu), SYSIASS (www.sysiass.eu), SCODECE (www.scodece.eu) and e-Pragmatic (www.e-pragmatic.eu) European projects, with various applications in industry, health care, …, and lifelong learning engineering education.
The cluster will organise an international conference on these topics in October 2014 in Gent, Belgium.

Abstract & Timing
Organization of an international conference for at least 200 participants in Gent, in October 2014. This conference will host different parallel sessions, organized by the cluster partners and different cooperating intermediary organizations and federations of industry. The goal of this conference is to interactively present the results of the clustering projects, the parallels and lessons learnt inside this thematic cluster, some success stories of industrial and research applications, and to start the discussion with the different stakeholders (industry, universities, organizations, decision makers, …) about the future challenges in the fields of the cluster.
This conference will feature a large exhibition, several parallel sessions, international key note speakers, …, in order to make the event as interactive as possible.
A thematic publication on the results of the projects, the parallels and lessons learnt, practical applications and results, testimony of the different stakeholders, … and a first, brief peek into the future developments of the fields of interest (cf. “Phase 2”).
In the second phase of the project, the project partners – using their own expertise, and also based on the results of the conference, and supported by different organizations – will jointly work on and research future development in the fields of modern system design, focusing on the key areas of (industrial) data communication and embedded control. Future applications of “Green automation”, the IoT (Internet of Things), “Industry 4.0” (so-called in Germany), …, will play an essential role in the economy of the 2 Seas area.
The whole group of cluster partners will engage in the general study and dissemination of these topics, and work in smaller groups on sub-items, clustering these specific studies into a final technological/scientific study report. This activity will produce “a peek into the future”: a general outlook and analysis, a limited number of jointly realized case studies and small demonstrators or pilots, …, identifying new technological, research and educative challenges for the future, in order to economically support the 2 Seas region.
The sub-items will be defined during Phase 1, but the focus will be on:
- Remote and mobile (distance) control, HMI (Human Machine Interface) and learning, referring to aspects of the IoT (Internet of Things), Industry 4.0 in Germany, … . [Experience and future work involves the TU Delft (distance learning in e-Pragmatic), GroupeHII-ISEN (mobile, Androïd based, phone and tablet embedded systems and applications), KU Leuven Campus Gent-KAHOSL (remote access to industrial networks, remote maintenance and diagnosis, …).]
- EMC (ElectroMagnetic Compatibility) issues regarding higher speed (and consequently more vulnerable) applications of (industrial) data communication and embedded control applications. [UGent-HoWest and UoG have considerable experience in these fields; other cluster partners may provide existing set-ups or applications to be tested.]
- Embedded control and green transportation. [Un. of Sussex (measuring set-ups for conventional and hybrid motors), GroupeHII_HEI (fuel cell embedded control and diagnosis), joint prestudy of control of hybrid engines. The TU Delft may bring in experience on hybrid and electric engines.]
These items all involve embedded and/or data communication and green aspects, and allow both joint work item wise and cluster wide.

Communication and sustainability
communication will be mainly focused on the international conference – with a number of parallel sessions – and on the cluster publication. A significant budget for this is allocated with the LP; all partners budget significant staff cost and resources, and VOKA Oost-Vlaanderen will use its experience and communication resources for both conference and publication.
In general, the project partners will set up a cluster website (and update existing project websites with links and short news), use a broad range of professional and economic organizations to communicate, will publish articles in different magazines and journals, and use local television and newspapers.
specific communication is focused on a technical/scientific study report, some workshops, and summarizing publications in more technical magazines.
Sustainability is obtained by keeping websites and discussion forums initiated in the clustering projects on-line for at least 5 years. Professional and economic organizations will benefit from the prospective study work done, future research and collaboration between universities is initiated by this cluster, and engineering students will profit from work done.
